Why embryos are frozen
After a stimulation cycle there are often more usable embryos than can safely be transferred. Freezing them allows further attempts without repeating stimulation, and it allows transfer in a later cycle when the uterine lining and hormone environment are more favourable.
Two preparation protocols
- Natural or modified natural cycle — the transfer is timed to your own ovulation. Fewer medications, but more monitoring visits and less flexibility for travel.
- Programmed (hormone replacement) cycle — oestrogen and progesterone are used to prepare the lining, and the transfer date is scheduled in advance. More predictable, and generally easier to plan a trip around.
For international patients, a programmed cycle is often chosen because the transfer date can be fixed weeks ahead.
How long it takes in China
With a programmed cycle, many patients arrive around a week before the transfer and stay a few days afterwards, with the earlier preparation partly done at home under remote guidance. This makes it the shortest of the IVF routes in terms of time in the country.
What to ask before starting
- How many embryos are stored, and what is the survival rate after thawing for your clinic?
- What is the annual storage fee, and how long is storage permitted?
- What happens to stored embryos if contact is lost or the storage period ends?
- Is preimplantation genetic testing relevant in your case?
Legal position in China: assisted reproduction is regulated and available only to married couples, using their own gametes. Surrogacy, egg donation for commercial purposes and non-medical sex selection are prohibited. Any clinic offering those services is operating outside the law, and we do not cover them. Eligibility is confirmed by the hospital against your marriage certificate and identity documents before treatment starts.
Common questions
Is a frozen embryo as good as a fresh one?
For many patients, outcomes with vitrified embryos are comparable to fresh transfer, and a frozen cycle avoids the hormonal environment of stimulation. The choice depends on your cycle and the clinic's protocol.
How long can embryos be stored?
Chinese regulations and hospital policy set limits, commonly several years with renewal. Confirm the specific terms in writing.
Do I need to be in China for the whole preparation?
Often not. Part of the preparation can be monitored locally with results shared, but the hospital decides.
What if the embryo does not survive thawing?
Clinics usually thaw a planned number and report survival. Discuss the contingency before the cycle starts.
