What an implant is

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. After the bone has integrated with it, a crown is fitted on top. Unlike a bridge, an implant does not require the neighbouring teeth to be cut down, which is the main clinical reason patients choose it.

How the treatment runs

1

Records and imaging

X-rays or a CBCT scan show bone volume, nerve position and the space available.

2

Planning

The hospital proposes the system, position and whether grafting is required, then issues a written quote.

3

Placement

Usually around 60 minutes per implant under local anaesthetic, with a review before you fly home.

4

Healing and crown

Three to six months of healing, then the abutment and crown are fitted on a second visit.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Implants generally suit adults with adequate bone volume and healthy gums. They are usually not the first choice for patients with uncontrolled diabetes, active heavy smoking, untreated gum disease or recent head and neck radiotherapy, until those issues are addressed. This is a clinical judgement, not a rule you can apply yourself, and it is the reason a records review comes first.

Ordinary risks, stated plainly

Like any surgical procedure, implant placement carries risks: swelling and bruising for a few days, possible infection, temporary numbness, and in some cases failure of the implant to integrate, which requires removal and re-treatment. Smoking and poor oral hygiene raise that risk. Your hospital should explain these before you consent, and any clinic that does not is worth avoiding.

Common questions

How long does the whole process take?
Surgical placement is about an hour per implant; the full process, including healing and the final crown, usually spans three to six months and two trips.
Is it painful?
Placement is done under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is not painful. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are normal and are managed with ordinary pain relief.
How long do implants last?
Longevity depends on bone condition, hygiene and smoking. Implants are not permanent and can fail; regular review with a dentist at home is part of keeping them.
Can I fly home straight after surgery?
Most patients can fly a few days after straightforward placement once the hospital has reviewed the site. Complex grafting cases need longer.
What if something goes wrong after I go home?
You are given records, the implant system details and aftercare instructions. A local dentist can review the site; the hospital remains contactable for clinical questions.
